Mike Maloney's documentary series on money, empires and inflation, all eleven episodes with notes on what each teaches and where Bitcoin fits.
Hidden Secrets of Money is a free documentary series by Mike Maloney, produced by GoldSilver. It is the most watched introduction to the history of money, the mechanics of fiat currency, and why empires that debase their money decline.
It is here because it teaches the problem well. Its authors favour gold and silver, and one episode promotes a non-bitcoin project; our notes on each episode say where we agree and where we do not. Watch it next to Money 101 and then Why Bitcoin only to complete the picture.
How to watch
The episodes build on each other. Watch 1, 2, 4 and 5 at minimum. Episodes 9 and 10 are the strongest history. Episode 8's first half is excellent on the Byzantine Generals Problem; the second half is where we disagree, and we say why.

Money vs Currency: The Hidden Difference
Mike Maloney · GoldSilver
The foundation of the series: money and currency are not the same thing. Currency is a medium of exchange and unit of account; money is all that plus a store of value over time. Fiat currencies fail the last test. Bitcoin angle: this is the exact distinction bitcoiners make. Ask which of the two bitcoin is becoming, and which the dollar has been since 1971. Pairs with our lesson Money is a promise.
Empires follow a pattern: good money, growth, public works, military expansion, debt, currency debasement, decline. Maloney walks the United States through each stage. Bitcoin angle: the stage he calls debasement is where a fixed-supply money becomes interesting. Watch for how many of the steps depend on the ability to print.
How the dollar became the world's reserve currency through Bretton Woods and the petrodollar, and the signs that the system is under strain: gold repatriation, trade deals outside the dollar. Bitcoin angle: neutral, borderless money is what countries reach for when they stop trusting the reserve issuer. Compare with our What happened in 1971 lesson.
The clearest explanation of where dollars come from: Treasury bonds, the Federal Reserve, commercial banks and fractional reserve lending, each step an IOU on the last. Bitcoin angle: contrast every step with bitcoin issuance, where new coins come only from a public schedule and no one can issue an IOU on the network's behalf.
Filmed at the Bundesbank's money museum: the history from barter and commodity money to gold, fiat and hyperinflation, and the loss of freedom that follows a monetary collapse. Bitcoin angle: Weimar is the case study everyone cites. Notice that the people who kept their wealth held money the state could not print.
Maloney's argument that several cycles (credit, housing, demographics, stock valuations, the monetary system) peak together, and why he expects deflation before a large inflation. Bitcoin angle: this is a forecast, not a fact; treat it as one scenario. Bitcoin's case does not depend on any particular crash.
Velocity of Money: The Hidden Trigger of Hyperinflation
Mike Maloney · GoldSilver
Why prices can stay calm after massive money creation and then move suddenly when people lose confidence and start spending faster. Bitcoin angle: velocity is about psychology; a money people want to hold has low velocity. See Time preference.
Starts with the Byzantine Generals Problem and explains how Bitcoin solved decentralised agreement. Where we part ways: the episode then promotes Hedera Hashgraph (HBAR), a permissioned, company-run network. We include it for the first half. For why a council-governed ledger is not a replacement for proof of work, see our course Why Bitcoin only.
Why Empires Collapse: Rome, America & the Money Printing Trap
Mike Maloney · GoldSilver
Rome's slow decline through war, debt, bureaucracy and the debasement of the denarius, set against the modern United States. Bitcoin angle: coin clipping and dilution are the same operation, done with metal then and keystrokes now.
The series finale: bread and circuses, welfare promises, cronyism and the loss of freedom at the end of Rome, and the choice the author sees for the present. Bitcoin angle: the Eastern Roman Empire kept a stable gold coin, the solidus, for seven centuries. Sound money and longevity are connected.
